The adoption of the national flag for Antigua & Barbuda was a milestone that marked self-governance for the people. Once apart of the West Indies Federation (1958-1962), the original intention of this was to create a political unit that would eventually become independent from Britain – similar to the Canadian Federation or the Australian Commonwealth. Due to inner arguments on the direction of the WIF, they disbanded in 1962 becoming associated states of the United Kingdom. Antigua & Barbuda eventually gained full independence on November 1st, 1981. The national flag was designed by Sir Reginald Samuel, an art teacher at a local Antigua high school. Samuel put very meticulous thought into the design of the flag and the symbolism wove in. The sun represents the dawning of a new era while the yellow, blue, and white represent the sun, sea, and sand. This is just the surface interpretation of the flag’s symbols. Each color had a way of representing the people of the country; the red stood for the energy of the people, blue is for hope, while black represents the African ancestry of the people. The V-shape made by the 2 red triangles stand for the victory of gaining their independence.
