The vertical tricolors of the Kingdom of Belgium were created back in 1789 during the Brabant Revolution. The colors of the coat of arms of Duchy of Brabant, red, yellow and black, were used for the cockades being worn in Brussels. The colors signify the red lion of Hainaut, Limburg and Luxembourg; the yellow represents the lion of Brabant, and the black represents the black lion of Flanders and Namur. Before August 1830, the French flag flew from the city hall of Brussels but after the Brussels Opera riots and the start of the Belgian Revolution it was quickly replaced with the tricolors of Belgium. In this first year, the flag was a tricolor flag with horizontal bands, but in January 1831 it would be replaced with vertical bands; later in October the color order would be changed to the current order we know today.
