The national flag of Israel, also known as the flag of Zion, prominently features a "dark sky-blue" Star of David centered on a white field, flanked by two thin blue bands near the top and bottom. Though designed by the Zionist movement in 1891, it was officially adopted on October 28, 1948, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel. The flag's design is inspired by the Tallit, a traditional Jewish prayer shawl, typically white with blue or black stripes. The Star of David, a symbol of Jewish identity since the late medieval era, was formally adopted by the First Zionist Congress in 1897. The blue in the Tallit derives from tekhelet, a dye made from a marine snail, historically significant in both Jewish and non-Jewish cultures as a symbol of royalty and high status. The Bible instructs the Israelites to use this dye in the Tallit’s tassels (tzitzit), symbolizing remembrance and adherence to the commandments: "So that they may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them" (Num 15:39).
